Newsome Grove Missionary Baptist Church was organized in the Skeeter Branch School House in 1891 by its founder Emmanuel Reynolds. In 1982, an acre of land was donated by brother Issac Newsome on which the church was built. Hence the name given in honor of brother Newsome. Emmanuel Reynolds served as a pastor for many years.
In 1898, Newsome Grove was rebuilt with additional rooms. The church was upgraded with bathrooms and new pews.
In 1967, Rev. Spencer Williams Jr. came to the church as a minster to assist the church in the transition period between the pastors. In 1968 he was named as pastor.
In 1973 God called Rev. Richard E. Smallwood as Pastor. As the membership grew the officers deemed it necessary to renovate. The church building was bricked, front entrance/lobby added, choir stand and side entrance expanded. In 1991 services was extended to 1st - 4th Sundays, Bible Study, and Sunday School. After continued growth it was decided to be time to build a church in 1997. Pat Brittenham donated land to Newsome Grove, down the road from the original church. August 1997 the members marched down the road to the new church. Rev. Smallwood led the march with Associate Minister Wanda D. Hall. Rev. Smallwood licensed several ministers under his leadership.
In 1996 Pastor Smallwood licensed the first female minister of Newsome Grove to preach the Gospel. Minister Wanda Hall continued her work for God at a sister church where she was ordained. Rev. Smallwood also licensed and ordained her grandfather and father. What a blessing to do for lineage!
In 1999 Pastor Smallwood licensed Katrina Futrell as the second female minister of Newsome Grove. In 2008 she became the first ordained female preacher for the church family. In 2011 she was made the assistant Pastor.
In 2008 Pastor Smallwood ordained 2 brothers who are both full time pastors. The Rev. Edgar Williams Jr (Charity Missionary Baptist Church) and Rev. Tony Williams Sr (Phillippi Missionary Baptist Church).
In 2015 Pastor Smallwood licensed the third female of the church family, Rev. Sonya Williams. She serves with Godly zeal and tenacity on ministerial team.
In 2018, after many years of standing strong and leading the church Rev. Richard E. Smallwood departed Newsome Grove Church as the Senior Pastor. With heavy hearts we prayed many blessings upon him and his family.
Rev. Katrina Futrell eagerly stepped in as the interim pastor until she was voted in a Pastor elect in 2019. Pastor Katrina Futrell served to her capacity through the Spring of 2022. God called her to go in a different direction and she departed from Newsome Grove Baptist Church.
In April 2022 Minister Sonya Williams was ordained and to date she is standing strong as the Associate Minister of Newsome Grove Baptist Church.
